It’s not an evergreen but something that you might not have considered.  Elderberry shrubs are loved by the birds and I’ve seen some very interesting ones grown for decorations, but only in catalogs, alas.  They look like a poor (wo)man’s cut leaf maple and they come in chartreuse and purple leaves, too.  If you need me to dig out the catalogues that I set aside that had a selection of them, let me know.  But I probably got them by being a garden writer so you probably got them too.

If you use them successfully in your garden, let me know.   I love the idea but don’t know that I can find a place for any this year.

In the past week I've added about 30 shrubs to my garden in an attempt to give the local birds more food and shelter. Filtered light to several hours of direct sunlight with ample water is the growing condition. Our soil is naturally acidic and I make my own mulch with a mixture of oak and maple leaves.

So far I've added lots of Viburnums, Mahonia, Azaleas, Rhododenrons and Pieris Japonica. Would like some recommendations on evergreens that would shelter the birds, grow in part shade conditions and possible feed them too.

Thanks,

Melanie
