Ester, the nursery I was at today had Elderberries for sale (Sambucus canadensis) and several landscapers were loading them onto their trucks. I maintain a butterfly garden for our local volunteers for wildlife center. We have elderberries planted outside the cages that house the hawks and Owls. I'm always pulling up millions of suckers so I was worried about planting them in my garden. I like knowing I can hack them back. Maybe I'll give them a try.

Fran, I had Kalmias in my hand today but already loaded two carts and the truck was full. Will go back for them on Monday.

Stephen, I guess conifers is what I'm looking for. What I want is a dense evergreen foliage that the smaller birds can hide in. We have several Red tailed Hawks that patrol the skies here. Outside my living room window are old yews that are always filled with birds. I don't know if they eat the red berries in them.

Today I saw the first Baltimore Oriole. When we moved here 7 years ago there were few birds and no other wildlife other than raccoons. The previous owner maintained a 3/4 acre lawn in front of the house with tons of chemicals. Scotts Lawn company had approached them to film a commercial here. I'm afraid they'd no longer want to do that. But on the brighter side, last year we had several box turtles crossing the yard every day and even found our first snake. Now more and more birds are arriving and nesting here. We battle constant traffic noise pollution so the bird songs are even more precious.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, keep them coming!
