When I do question and answer sessions, peonies get lots of questions. This
has been my advice, not from a book but from practical experience.

Margaret is correct, Peonies do not like to be planted too deep. I use the
two finger rule, the eye buds shouldn't be buried more than two finger
widths deep. Since Peonies aren't moved for very long time periods,
seriously amend the soil before planting them.

You might be scratching your head and thinking "but I didn't plant them deep
15 years ago". Due to natural soil erosion or mulch or leaves, they could be
deeper now than they were originally planted.

My final tip is to leave those ants that crawl across the buds ALONE! The
ants are good, don't wash/spray/squash them away.

Having a sad day here. Last September a young stray cat arrived. I waited
all winter to be able to garden with him at my side and all week he has
faithfully followed me around. We keep him in at night but yesterday he
slipped out the door around 6:00 pm. Found him on the side of the road this
morning. I was so looking forward to his companionship in the garden.

Heart broken,
Melanie Vassallo
