I think I'll just dig 'em this fall and give 'em
away. The doubles aren't my favorite flower, anyway!

Stephen,
If you add more compost each year for ten
years, couldn't they be
too deep now? Do they compete with other
plants nearby even
though they are the largest plant?

Sandie,
My peonies are at surface level. Seattle
is generally a mild winter area, but they bloom for other people. My
soil is sand generously amended with compost (more added each fall).
Where I've seen them bloom best the soil was very heavy. There are no
trees; they are the largest plant in the border and they get full sun all
day.
I think I've done everything right and still
they don't bloom after 10 years in the ground.

Stephen,
Peonies can also be tempermental about how deep
they are planted. In
cold climates their eye should
be planted 2 inches below the surface of
the soil...in warmer climates less. They
like a really loose soil. They
shouldn't compete with trees
for moisture and they need clear space like
3-4 feet around the plant
along with full sun all day.

Hmmm. My 4 peonies have been in the
same sunny aspect for 10 years and nary a bloom. I've done
everything ever mentioned anywhere and still only a couple of struggling
shoots.

Maybe it is simply the sun that is the reason for bloom
where the plants had been moved from a shady spot.
For years I've heard peonies sulk after moving.. however, three
springs past (wrong time to move peonies according to conventional
wisdom) I moved several barely alive peonies (2 or 3 stems
each) from
shade to full sun and mixed at least a cupful of woodashes into
the soil for each before planting, and again each fall
and spring since...by their second spring in the new
location they were already very very large bushes with dozens
of stems and dozens of flowers.
Roy surely is the expert, but this is my experience for
what it's worth.

and Peonies
I have to share something
wonderful. Four years ago, I bought a 1-gallon peony plant
in the spring. I planted it and inoculated the roots with
mycorrhizal fungi. That fall I moved the plant, as the place
where I put it originally didn't get enough sunlight The
next spring, the peony sprouted and bore 3 flowers. That was
totally amazing, given I had moved the little plant and that
usually peonies take at least two years to flower after
planting. I thought the mycorrhizae might be the
reason.
Last September, Roy Klehm of Song
Sparrow Farms gave me a small 'Silver Dawn Mix' peony root.
I inoculated it with mycorrhizae and planted it in a full-sun
location in my perennial garden. This week, the peony
sprouted, and it has four buds on it!! Obviously,
mycorrhizal fungi is the reason for precocious
blooming.
