I had the idea that in my first lecture I would begin with a 20 minute outline of the content of Mark followed by a 30 minute overview of the history of the interpretation of Mark.

How about this for an overview?

* Used by Matthew and Luke
* Connected with Peter (Papias)
* Problems perceived (Papias, Luke [?], John [?])
* Memoir of Apostle, Read in churches (Justin Martyr)
* Harmonised (Long Ending, Tatian, Manuscript Tradition)
* Irenaeus: One of Four (but not well known?)
* Alexandria: Clement (not read publicly?); SGM?; Mark
* Petrine connection consolidated (exaggerated)
* P45 and emergence of four-gospel codices (mostly 4th Cent & later)
* Augustine: epitimator of Matthew
* Any role in lectionaries????
* Medieval period
* Harmony tradition (e.g. Calvin's commentary on Harmony)
* Renaissance
* Griesbach Hypothesis (Griesbach to Tubingen School)
* Emergence of Markan Priority
* Mark and Hist Jesus (e.g. Holtzmann)
* Reaction: Schweitzer & Wrede: theologised narrative
* Form-criticism
* Redaction criticism
* Literary & narrative approaches
* Contemporary use: performance, evangelistic and catechetical courses, liberationist readings.
* Latest trends
