That worked man thank you much. However I need to be able to do
this from php. How can I go about making that environment variable
permanent. Is there a file or somewhere in a conif I can stick it to
make it a permanent environment?

I think James patch is not complete. You should define ASA_DATABASE
environment, something like (using tsql)

ASA_DATABASE=your_db_name tsql -S freetds_conf_server_name -U username
-P password
