I did make the change in the hosts file, and verified with ping that it
worked. I had the same result with isql.

I also did find the file .odbc.ini (did not realize it was hidden). Here is
what it has in it:

[P450]
Driver = TDS
Description = Partners
Trace = No
Servername = dataserver
Database = Partners
Port = 1433
TDS_Version = 7.0

Does this look correct to you guys? Thanks!
