Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest that freetds is missing functionality here.
Ten to one it's PHP's fault, given I know for a fact that PHP's dblib code
handles errors sketchily. In fact I had a moan about that a while ago on
this ML. I've been having a play with PHP + ct-lib to see it copes any
better as I want a solution that stops me having to patch every new PHP
version that comes out.

I'll definitely write back if I notice freetds is missing anything :)
