A Response to John Lupia:

John,

It seems to me that the issue in Acts 15 can only make sense if both Jews
and Gentiles knew and understood that the Jews were still adhering to
Torah. If it were the case that Peter, Paul et al were preaching a "law
free Gospel" for the Jews it would be highly unlikely that the question of
Gentile behavior vis-a-vis the Law would be in dispute; if it is not
binding on Jews it certainly is not binding on Gentiles.

Moreover it seems to me that given Paul's clear judgement on those who
preach another Gospel, Galatians 1, that if his Gospel was a "law free
Gospel" for Jews that he would be calling down heaven upon his own head by
his response to James in Acts 21.

So it seems far from pellucid to me that Peter's own words, Acts 10, ought
to be understood to say what they in fact do not. I find the "New"
perspective hopeful (although the voices are far from homogenous) in
resolving the tensions created by traditional presuppositions re. Paul
(and of course Peter) and the Law.

Cordially in Christ,
Rick
