I seem to remember that in a session of the SBL Rhetoric and NT Section at
the Orlando meeting, Frank Hughes suggested to a presenter that the metaphor
of "thorn" might possibly be understood as a reference to the cross. He had
no time to elaborate but maybe he can do so now.

On the face of it I was not persuaded at the time, but maybe Frank can help
me along. Frank, what about it?
