Jews reckoned days from sundown to sundown, but not the Greeks and
Romans. I suspect that the author of John was working with the popular
terminology of his audience rather than that of the Jewish community. BTW, I
agree, there is no evidence in the New Testament that the church had yet
begun to treat Sunday as a sacred day. That seems to have been a later
development.
