Dear Sheila McGinn

Yes, I guess I was "rattling your chain" regarding your subjective position
concerning the authenticity of 1 Cor 14:34ff. We all have subjective
interests in our interpretations. That has been my point when I have raised
the issue of ideology in this discussion. Something in your original post,
which I responded to, indicated to me that you would prefer that Paul had
not told the Corinthian women to shut up. You are in good company. As I
have surveyed the literature on this issue the last months I have found
that the interpolation theory has become the dominant position. See
Roetzel, Hays, Furnish, Fee, etc. Maybe Conzelmann's cursory dismissal of
14:34-35 merely on internal grounds got the whole thing going. But I
cannot but be suspicious when I see the correlation between the raise of
feminism and the popularity of the interpolation theory. It just seems like
nowadays people don't want Paul to have said what he said. They, and I
suspect you, seem to want to portray Paul as a "nice guy."

As to the nice guy discussion, I suppose my point has similarities to Neil
Elliots talk about the domesticated Paul. Since I believe Dr. Elliot is on
this list maybe I could direct the question directly to him.

AS to Paul's negative portrayal of his opponents Bob Jewett will have a
presentation on that topic at the international SBL in Lahti, Finland, this
summer. I am eager to hear what he has to say on a topic so close to what
I have been discussing on this list.

PS Participating in this discussion is a little difficult right now. I have
left Emory and is on my way back to Lund in Sweden. I'm writing this note
at a hotel in Washington and will try to respond when I have a chance to
get to my e-mail. DS
