Dear Edgar,

Thanks for that correction.  I meant to type the 1620s, not the 1820s, for Hugo Grotius.

The survey I gave focused on the early debate up to and including Wrede.  I would say that the fact that the pseudonymous authorship of 2 Thess. became what seems now to be the majority view is primarily due to Wolfgang Trilling, Untersuchungen zum Zweiten Thessalonicherbrief (1972) and his 1980 EKK commentary on 2 Thess.  Willi Marxsen's Introduction and his subsequent commentaries on 1 and 2 Thess. also exercised a powerful influence.  The fact that Beda Rigaux's close-to-magisterial commentary was, in Trilling's words, "cautious and a bit vague" on the authorship of 2 Thess. also clearly helped.

Of course I was willing to give excerpts of my translations of Wrede and Hilgenfeld because these works have long passed into the public domain.  I could probably search the archives of this list and summarize the discussion.  Exams here are just about over.  Graduation is this Sunday night.  Then diocesan synod will start May 16th in the Cathedral.  So next week looks possible.

All best,
