After hearing a few skronky/oddball clips online, I think I'm gonna go to
this and thought it worth adding to Ross' list. I'm hoping the '8pm' thing
below isn't utter and complete bullshit and the headliner will start by 10 at
the latest, but that's probably me being old and naive. Anyway, these sound
fun:

Subject: The Dead Kenny Gs in Raleigh | Thurs. Jan. 19 at The Pour House
THE DEAD KENNY Gs in RALEIGH, NC
THURSDAY, JANUARY 19 at THE POUR HOUSE
Listen to Black Truman (Harry the Hottentot)
Who:
THE DEAD KENNY Gs
(featuring SKERIK, MIKE DILLON & BRAD HOUSER)
What:
If the moniker for the combustible punk jazz trio The Dead Kenny Gs doesn’t
say it all at first glance, one listen to their latest album Operation Long
Leash quickly makes intentions clear. Saxophonist Skerik, bassist Brad Houser
and drummer/percussionist Mike Dillon are committed to musical subversion of
the highest order.
Exploring a muso obsession of musical styles and sonic colors, The Dead Kenny
Gs have both the courage and the chops to realize their wildest aural
visions. One moment they draw inspiration from punk legends The Minutemen,
the next finds them embracing the spirit of jazz giant Rahsaan Roland Kirk
and still another speaks to the influence of indie rock progenitors Deerhoof;
yet all the while sounding purely DKGs.
To further that extent, it's not just music informing the trio's voice, but a
keen understanding of political conspiracy in American history. The title of
the DKGs latest album, Operation Long Leash, comes from the clandestine CIA
operation in the late ‘40s to fund Abstract Expressionism as a means for
Western culture to undermine the rigid, confined and conformist ideals of the
Soviet Union during the early years of the Cold War.
The Dead Kenny Gs hit the southeast in January for a headline tour. They
perform in Raleigh, NC at The Pour House on Thursday, January 19.
Where:
THE POUR HOUSE
224 South Blount Street
Raleigh, NC 27601-1408
(919) 821-1120
When:
THURSDAY, JANUARY 19
8pm
THE DEAD KENNY Gs Upcoming Tour Dates:
January 14 | Crow Bar | Tampa, FL
January 16 | Will's Pub | Orlando, FL
January 17 | Jack Rabbits | Jacksonville, FL
January 18 | Pour House | Charleston, SC
January 19 | Pour House | Raleigh, NC
January 20 | Mo Daddy's | Asheville, NC
What the press is saying about The Dead Kenny Gs:
"Describing themselves as "punk jazz," the group embraces elements of jazz,
metal and Afro-beat with a giddy abandon." - Los Angeles Times
"Given its play-on-words moniker that simultaneously drives a sock down the
mouth of smooth-jazz king Kenny G and recalls the early '80s hardcore-punk
band The Dead Kennedys, the powerhouse trio taps into a sound that fuses jazz
and punk. It’s a crazy mix played intensely by a group that has the skill
and knowledge to pull it off." - Alarm Magazine
"…bursts of thrashing metal alternate with cool sax-and-vibes segments,
whetting one’s appetite for the tablas-fueled Indian jam ahead." - Relix
“The Dead Kenny Gs pinball between styles: Afro-pop, Balkan, Klezmer and
pocket funk lashed to Middle Eastern modality.” – New York Times

These guys are pretty incredible live, and I will definitely be there. If
you've never seen Skerik play, that alone is worth the trip out.
