Hey folks!

We have some FUN shows this week including a thrasher rock band show
tonight, an acoustic campfire inspired Klezmer show and then an Early 90s'
dance party for all!

Plus, don't miss our special Benefit show *THIS SUNDAY!* with In the Year
of the Pig, Savage Knights, Systems, Secret Boyfriend and Electric Cactus!
Doors at 7pm, music starts at 8pm. $5-10 donations.

Proceeds go towards the Nightlight to continue operating as Chapel Hill /
Carrboro's experimental performance space!

also, on *Friday, October 15th* we are hosting a special *"HomeMADE
Creations"* Video night where all you talented secret artists can show your
special video work that you've been hiding in your closet for the past ten
years.. No early submission or fee is required but feel free to confirm with
Alexis at nightlightinfo(a) gmail.com. We welcome artists to come and share
their work and process.

Luv,
Nightlight

*STARTING SEPTEMBER 1ST: NOW OPEN Mondays thru Saturdays FROM 5 PM ONWARD AS
A CAFE AND PERFORMANCE SPACE!*

*Wed 09/29 Boyzone <http://blogs.myspace.com/boyszone> / Tinsel
Teeth<http://www.myspace.com/tinselteethy>(Load Records) / Unstoppable
Death Machines <http://www.myspace.com/theunstoppabledeathmachines> /
Electric Cactus- 9:30 PM: $6 *

With Jeff Rehnlund back in town after schooling in New Mexico, Boyzone is
experiencing a resurgence of its sweaty man-on-man
moan/mutter/spit/scream/crackle/static/splatter/'splode mode of noise and
electric improv. Brooklyn's Unstoppable Death Machines exude sheer
terrifying bliss in rock duo format, strapping on face mics and
spazz-grooving out in loudasfugk jump jams for fans of Mindflayer, Harry
Pussy, even some Faith No More, bros. One-man bass-drums-electronics trio
Electric Cactus opens.

*Thurs 09/30 Gmish Klezmer Band <http://philblank.com/gmish.html> and Taraf
de Unemployed (Richmond, va) / *

*Vincent Joos: Presents and discusses video from recent Romanian fieldwork
trip / *

*Blood Jar Creepers (with Aaron Smithers, Ezekiel Graves, Charlie Hearon and
Crowmeat Bob)*

9 PM $5

Here's an interesting cultural experiment otherwise unknown to the halls of
the Nightlight:

Carrboro's Gmish Klezmer Band (you may have seen them playing in the alcove
at Nested and other spots in town) join Richmond's Taraf de Unemployed in a
tish, a traditional Hasidic gathering around a table where participants
discuss the Torah, recite hymns and songs, and partake of refreshments.
Tonight, expect mostly recitations of klezmer tunes and maybe a little kugel
and falafel. Vincent Joos may be more popularly known in town for being the
UNC student instrumental in motivating the release of Prof. Bill Ferris's
recordings of Mississippi Fred McDowell (out now on Devil Down Records), but
tonight he's sharing and discussing field recordings from work in Romania.
The Blood Jar Creepers (aka Nervous Creep) open with their take on
traditional American music.

Ethnographers. Chapel Hillians Michael and His Garden and Chris Jones open.

Now that it's acceptable to like the Grateful Dead again (
http://www.arthurmag.com/2009/05/19/how-to-get-into-the-grateful-dead-originally-pubd-in-arthur-no-18sept-2005/),
I think it's time we show how much an In The Year of the Pig show
approximates the o.g. G.D. experience:
1) Long-ass songs with minimal vocals, psychedelic effects, and inspired
improvisations: GD = see 50-minute "Dark Stars," trails, Jerry leads. ITYOTP
= see 15-minute "And Remember The Good Times," trails, Harper's squealing
fretboard wrestling, Zeke's squealing electronics
2) Unique shows every single night: GD = see 500 ways of playing "That's It
For The Other One." ITYOTP = see 500 ways of playing "You Want To Live."
3) Bearded frontmen with penchants for monochromatic t-shirts: GD = see J.
Garcia. ITYOTP = see A. Smithers
4) Two drummers who play like one drummer with eight hands: GD = see B.
Kreutzman, M. Hart. ITYOTP = see R. Biggers, D. Cantwell
5) A bassist who drops notes so deep and resonant that you feel them more
than you hear them: GD = see P. Lesh. ITYOTP = see L. Sward
6) All your friends are there: GD = see that really cool PhD student who
shared a bowl with you back at Deer Creek in '94. ITYOTP = see the same.
7) There's frequently some bearded dudes dishing righteous burritos in the
parking lot: GD = see Chewie, Tuck, and Cricket; ITYOTP = see Smithers and
Lincoln
8) It's the best thing in town that night, so come on out-- Triangle
pan-jazz ensemble Savage Knights and Chapel Hill/Charlotte
ambient/progressive posthardcore titans Systems keep the festive atmosphere
going early. Don't sleep.

*COMING UP!! *

*Tues 10/05 Inspector 22 / Ember Schrag / Brian Day / The Migrant - 9:30 PM
$5 *

In a world populated by guns, cigarettes, haldol, Satanism, cannibalism,
cuss words, and heartache, Todd Emmert deals with life by writing the only
way he can: a lot. As Inspector 22, Todd has several self-released discs and
more out on dontrustheruin and Odessa, with even more to come. By the time
you read this, a disc called "Friends in High Places" will be on the shelves
of fine area retailers. Come out tonight to hear these songs in the live
setting. Lincoln, NE's Ember Schrag is a songwriter who lands somewhere
between Scout Niblett and Karen Dalton, writing about land and space and
hope and despair. Brian Day and Danish psych-songwriter The Migrant open.

*early Wed 10/06 Open Old Time Jam! :: all are welcome:: 5-9 PM : FREE *

*later Wed 10/06 Pairdown <http://www.myspace.com/pairdown> (Pittsburgh) /
Wood
Ear <http://www.myspace.com/woodear> (Durham) - 9:30 PM *

Pairdown is David Leicht and Raymond Morin. They perform as a duo, drawing
from a repertoire of fingerstyle guitar duets and songs. Their newest
project, Petrifidelity, is a limited-edition, handmade tablature book with
accompanying audio CD. Prior releases include: Holykyle, a full-length LP
blending folk rock, blues and experimental music; and the eponymous EP, a
short collection of acoustic songs.

Since 2005, Pairdown has performed on bills with: Death Vessel, Jack Rose,
David Daniell & Douglas McCombs, Glenn Jones, D. Charles Speer, Mountains,
unFact, Brokeback, Great Lake Swimmers, Nick Schillace, Keenan Lawler,
Wooden Wand, The Impossible Shapes, Kurt Weisman, Jon Mueller’s Physical
Changes, Micah Blue Smaldone, Eleni Mandell, Milo Jones, Noveller, Mike
Tamburo, Simon Joyner, Sin Ropas, Red Horse, The Ditty Bops, etc.

*Thurs 10/07 Neill Prewitt (Yuxtapongo Episodes <http://yuxtapongo.com/>) /
Alexis Gideon (Portland, video artist) /9 Fingered Thug / Mecanikill *

* 9:30 PM :: $6 *

Neill and Alexis return to the Nightlight with their video manipulations,
collages, stop-motion, animation, electronic music, and wild times. Nine
Fingered Thug is the latest Irene Moon project-- along with Lincoln Hancock,
Scott Craddock, and Samuel Minttu, Irene creates organ tunes with
pitch-shifted vocals for doom/industrial backdrops. I get scared every time
I hear it. Mecanikill boasts the distinction of currently being #1 on
ReverbNation's Electronica/Dance charts for Carrboro, NC, but this ain't no
dance music. Prepare for sample-heavy noise/industrial/power electronics,
and the possibility that people actually will dance to it.

Collards <http://www.myspace.com/michaelhollandmusic>/ Bad Mr. Viswas and
the Family : 9:30 PM : $7 *

Secretly Canadian's long-time dark siren Scout Niblett put out an excellent
record on Drag City this year that took elements of minimal wave, 90's
posthardcore, and British folk to create something both beautiful and
haunting. Holy Sons take the same slow-burn approach to songwriting that
will appeal to fans of Boatman's Call-era Cave, the Black Heart Procession,
and Will Oldham's darkness moments. Local blues-rock veterans Michael
Holland with Peas and Collards and Raleigh's soul-pop songsters BMV and the
Family open. Get a chance to hear your town favorite, sitarist Mr. Viswas
Chitnis on the guitar!
