Hello Hello!

This week catapults us into a stacked round' house of killer national acts
combined with local heroes.

Plus, mark your calendars now for the *November 6th Carrboro / Chapel Hill
Home Brew Fest* at Nightlight. Local brew masters showcase and uncap their
current home brews and let you taste it! This event sells out every year so
try to get your tickets in advance! Plus, check out the featured article
that the Herald Sun wrote about it today:
http://www.heraldsun.com/view/full_story/6371622/article-BREW-YOUR-OWN

And, congratulations again to the Moaners for their upcoming HFQ Record
Release party *this SATURDAY* at NL with Ryan Gustafson (backed by members
of the Drug Horse Collective) and DJ Steph Russ!

Please read below for show descriptions and links!

ATL boy-girl haze garagers Carnivores come back to the Nightlight with songs
that teeter between dreamy surf-tropicalisms and screamy no-wave nihilisms.

*Wed 09/15 Elf Power <http://www.myspace.com/elfpower> / Let's
Wrestle<http://www.myspace.com/letsfuckingwrestle>(Merge Records) ...
*

...plus special video screening before live acts of *Major Organ and the
Adding Machine* <http://www.orangetwin.com/majormovie.html>

Doors at 8 PM , movie at 9 PM , music to follow... $10 / more details on
advance ticket sales tba..

Two generations of indie-rock royalty converge on the Nightlight for a hump
day full of film and music. The venerable statesmen and o.g. Elephant Sixers
Elf Power are touring behind their new record, Elf Power, set to be released
the day before they hit the stage in Chapel Hill. Initial tracks point to
gentle cowboy ballads with sweet harmonies and psyched-out noise backdrops
for evenings of transcendent akashic contemplation. Heir apparents Let's
Wrestle aren't old enough to drink in this country yet, but their smart,
catchy post-punk betrays an intense knowledge of London/Cardiff/New York ca.
'78-'81 while singer Wesley Patrick Gonzalez's wry songsmithery fits
somewhere between Steven Patrick Morrissey and Benedict Roger Wallers. Come
early-- Eric Harris's (Elf Power) psychedelic children's film Major Organ
and the Adding Machine will be screened before the music starts.

*Thurs 09/16 **Cats Cradle <http://www.catscradle.com/> Presents...Sea
Wolf<http://www.myspace.com/seawolf>/ Patrick
Park <http://www.myspace.com/patrickpark> / Sera
Cahoone<http://www.myspace.com/seracahoone>- 9:00 PM
*

*$12/$10 advance :: **Tickets can be purchased from the Cats Cradle and CD
Alley in Chapel Hill *

The beautiful ambient/orchestrated folk songwriting of Alex Brown Church and
Sea Wolf return to the Nightlight, this time bringing along songwriters
Patrick Park and Sera Cahoone (Sub Pop Records, ex-Band of Horses).

*Fri 09/17 ** LE WEEKEND <http://www.myspace.com/leweekendleband> / Decoration
Ghost <http://www.myspace.com/decorationghost> / On The
Take<http://www.myspace.com/onthetakeband>-
*

* 10 PM $ 5 *

Local lush rockers Le Weekend head a bill with Decoration Ghost, a Gate City
quintet featuring former members of local favorites Kudzu Wish, Eagle Bravo,
Taija Rae, and Manamid. Decoration Ghost's highly-catchy chordy indie-rock
reaches back to Chapel Hill ca. 1994 (see also: Dillon Fence, Portastatic)
and puts them on par with the current crop of 90s revivalists (see also:
Embarrassing Fruits, IWTDI). Ex-Piedmont Charisma frontman Chad Pry fronts
On the Take, an Asheville electro-indie-new-wave-rock trio.

*Sat 09/18** The Moaners <http://www.myspace.com/themoaners> (Record Release
Party on Holidays for Quince Records) / Ryan
Gustafson<http://www.myspace.com/ryangustafsonmusic>: $5
*

*+ DJ STEPH RUSS - Doors at 9 PM, Party to Follow! *

Listen to the first track off *Nocturnal*, the new record from local legends
The Moaners. Go ahead-- it's called "Humid Air"-- it's on their Myspace page
linked above. I will wait. Alright, now think on that slide guitar and Laura
King's studda-step drumming and the one lonesome cricket and the two distant
dogs. And think of all that has happened here, on this earth. Like
Faulkner's blood hot and strong for living pleasuring suffering, sinking
into the soil. That same blood runs through the lyrics of Melissa Swingle,
who has a voice such that you would pay money to hear her read articles from
the tax code, so its a double bonus to get that dulcet drawl and thinkin'
persons' elucidation. Add equal parts rollicking swamp boogies and 4am
front-porch ballads, focused kit work and loop-pedal slide solos, and you've
got a damn good time. Classic country-soul genius Ryan Gustafson opens,
bringing some of his Drughorse compatriots on stage for a rocking opener.
Top shelf dance party DJ Steph Russ will keep the party popping into the wee
hours for you true nocturnals.

*Mon 09/20 Amps for Christ <http://www.myspace.com/ampsforchrist> (CA/ Ex-
Man is the Bastard) / CLANG
QUARTET<http://www.facebook.com/pages/Clang-Quartet/185972993458>/
NUSS<http://nuss.detournemont.net/>/ Tiny
Concept <http://www.myspace.com/tinyconcept> (France) / Ca$h $lave
Clique<http://www.myspace.com/cashslaveclique>- 9:30 PM $5
*

Henry Barnes' long-running oldtime/electronics project Amps for Christ is
coming to the Nightlight! If you haven't heard this influential
waveform/homemade instrument/electronics/Eastern-musics experimenter, check
out one of his many Shrimper or 5RC releases from the past fifteen years--
WXYC has most of 'em, so give the station and call and request one.
Literally turning on his amps for Christ, Christian harsh-noise veteran
Clang Quartet joins the bill, as does power-noise giant and show-organizer
Scott "Nuss" Nussman. French minimal waver Tiny Concept and VA go-go noise
artist Ca$h $lave Clique return to Chapel Hill on their endless tour, so
come on out early for them.

*Wed 09/22 Phantascist / Rat Babies <http://www.myspace.com/ratbabies>
/ HOG<http://www.myspace.com/hoggnogg>- 9:30 PM $5
*

Carrboro free jazz/psych/noise duo Phantascist shift between caterwauling
alto exultation, meditative guitar interludes, SCG-style faux-raga
ruminations, and vocal improvisations that are as much tongue-of-flame as
they are Linda Sharrock. Georgia trio Rat Babies share a lot of reference
points with fellow Athenians and sludge-gods Harvey Milk, but Mux Blank's
rumble fuzz bass playing is something heavier than hero-worship. Local
sludge-thrashers HOG open up with a LOUD sound that's hard to follow.

*Thurs 09/23 Caleb Caudle and the
Bayonets<http://www.myspace.com/calebcaudle>/ Soft
Spot <http://www.myspace.com/withlovesoftspot> (NYC) /
Tripp<http://www.myspace.com/trippband>(Elvis Costello band) - 9:30 PM
$5
*

Winston-Salem's Caleb Caudle and the Bayonets play a country-pop that's fun
and infections and just enough "alt" to keep the true-believers happy. Like
a Cross Canadian Ragweed without the syrupy slick, or hits-heavy Springsteen
with more twang. BK gentle dream-poppers Soft Spot deliver ambient sound
palettes and post-punk drumming for frontwoman Sarah Kinlaw's
Emmylou-meets-Joanna siren call. Local guitar/piano-poppers Tripp open.

*Fri 09/24** Signal Fest <http://www.signalfest.com/Home> - The Southeast
Electronics Music Festival - DANCE PARTY! 9 PM: $10 *

*Jubilee <http://www.jubileelovesyou.com/> /
TALK<http://nightmovesblog.blogspot.com/2010/08/talk-august-promo-mix.html>/
DJ One Duran (WXYC & 1200 Problems ) / DJ Steph Russ (WXYC DJ)
*

* Serious bass pressure at Nightlight to kick off the weekend portion of
this year's Signalfest. We're pleased to present the following lineup, with
headliners from the mighty Nightshifters label:*

Jubilee [Brooklyn, NY]:

When she’s not ‘regularly whipping dance floors into a frenzy with her
rambunctious combination of bass-heavy electro, upfront house, UK funky, and
tropical flavor’ (XLR8R), Jubilee is Publicity Director of the
N...ightshifters label with Jason Forrest (aka DJ Donna Summer). Jubilee
holds down a monthly residence at the infamous ‘Flashing Lights' parties at
88 Palace in NYC, with fellow residents DJ Ayres (The Rub) and Nick
Catchdubs (Fools Gold Records). Jubilee has spread her sparks across the
globe in far away lands such as Bucharest, Berlin, London and Reykvavik. In
New York, she has played along side heavy hitters like Drop The Lime, The
Juan Maclean, Simian Mobile Disco, Digitalism, Jokers of the Scene and Green
Velvet.

Talk
<http://www.nightlightclub.com/%20http://www.myspace.com/ttttalk>[Atlanta,
GA]:

One of the newest additions to the Nightshifters label, Talk helps hold down
the Night Moves monthly in Atlanta. His debut EP "Holy Mountain" will be out
in October, and you can expect he'll be ready to present it to Signal in a
fine fashion.

*Sat 09/25** Signal Fest <http://www.signalfest.com/Home> - Second Evening
of Southeastern Electronics Music Festival - 9 PM : $10 *

Rapoon (Robin Storey, ex Zoviet France member, Newcastle, UK) / Illusion of
Safety (Dan Burke, Chicago)
Ethan Clauset / Steve Burnett / Khristian Weeks / Bicameral Mind

It is impossible to underestimate the influence of industrial drone and
fractured electronics pioneers Zoviet France. Robin Storey was already an
accomplished electronic composer when he joined the group in 1979-- as
Rapoon, he continues to experiment with sustained electronics textures,
glitched techno beats, vocal drones, heavy industrial drum machine work, and
more. Chicago sound artist Dan Burke has collaborated with a number of
electronic composers and experimenters through his Illusion of Safety
project-- his current work of diverse industrial and electronic compositions
works to explore the psychological impact of sound. Local electronic
experimenters Ethan Clauset, Steve Burnett (Subscape Annex), Khristian
Weeks, and Bicameral Mind (Bryce Eiman and Shaun Sandor) open.

*Mon 09/27 Spider Bags <http://www.myspace.com/spiderbags> / Strapping Field
Hands <http://www.myspace.com/strappingfieldhands> (Philadelphia) - 9:30 PM
$5*

O.G. Siltbreeze lo-fi rockers Strapping Fieldhands recently got the
justly-deserved reissue treatment of their first LP and are now rolling
through the Nightlight. Right as rain blooz-garage locals Spider Bags
headline. Don't sleep on this one-- Monday night, it'll start early

*Tues 09/28 Solo Performance by Asimina Chremos
<http://asiminachremos.com/>(Dance ARTIST)
*

*lightspace* is a 45-minute solo dance by Asimina Chremos. Think: Perceptual
artist James Turrell attends a Japanese tea ceremony and the host ends up
serving an unknown form of extraterrestrial, aquatic tai chi. The
site-sensitive dance takes into account the character of the performance
area, in this case, the interior of the Nightlight club. A resident of
Chicago for the last decade or so, Chremos recently made Durham her home
base.

*Wed 09/29 Boyzone <http://blogs.myspace.com/boyszone> / Tinsel
Teeth<http://www.myspace.com/tinselteethy>(Load Records) / Unstoppable
Death Machine <http://www.myspace.com/theunstoppabledeathmachines> /
Electric Cactus (Julian from Phantascist) 9:30 PM *

>From Skinpoison.com-

"Like a few Providence bands before them, Lightning Bolt & Drop Dead, Tinsel
Teeth put on a real ‘hands on’ live show. Typically performing on the floor
rather than a stage. The band is in your face, sitting on your chest, and
probably covering you in what you hope is FAKE blood and has you tripping
over what you think may have been a dildo that had just flown off the
singers’ mostly nude body. It is a rarity to see a female perform with such
abandon, no fear, no hang-ups, just going for it. Haters be fucked. The
band’s music is full-on sludgy, noise, evoking comparisons to Jesus Lizard,
The Birthday Party, Rapeman, and Shellac but with an element of fright that
these male fronted bands lack. I don’t know why, but the sight of a young,
attractive woman seemingly abusing herself with no shame or self awareness
is so much more jarring and affecting."
