For sheer longevity at a low cost, though, you can't beat vinyl or
shellac discs. In general, the cost of digital preservation is many
times higher than that of analog preservation -- for a Hollywood
feature film the cost of analog (salt mine) storage and preservation
is ~ $1500/year -- but for a digital feature the annual cost of
preservation is more than $220,000/year. Most digital features are
actually transferred to film for long-term storage.
