FLAC is a good choice of codec. Lossless, support for gapless playback (important for live recordings), takes tags and the code is open. Compressed files will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 55% of their original filesize. If you're ripping in Windows, EAC works well. Google for an online tutorial in getting it set up correctly, there are a couple of very good ones.

what's the best way to preserve music these days? i have a bunch of live recordings of local and touring artists that are currently on CD-R. i want to rip them and archive them somewhere. is FLAC still the best format or should i be using something else.
thanks.
