Holy crap, the Congress apparently decreed that Daylight Savings Time starts this weekend. Spring Forward! It's gonna be fuckin' dark at 7:00 Monday when my alarm goes off. Presumably Congresspeople don't get up 'til like 9:30 most days, so they'd never know. Fuckers.

Friday, March 7
RTX (http://www.truxrox.com/)
Black Skies (http://blackskies.us/)
Double Negative (http://www.myspace.com/thedoublenegative)
Downtown Event Center, Raleigh

RTX is the Jennifer Herrema half of Royal Trux, I believe. Double Negative is the best hardcore band in the Southeast, I reckon. Black Skies are gonna challenge RTX to see who can stand with legs furthest apart without splitting their pants.

Friday, March 7
Hammer No More the Fingers (http://www.hnmtf.com)
Born Ruffians (http://www.bornruffians.com)
Cadence Weapon (http://www.myspace.com/cadenceweapon)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Can random MP3 blogs across the USA generate enough heat to alter the arc of HNMTF's career? That is to say, everybody who hears 'em seems to instantly like 'em, and thanks to Teh Internets (and a few strategic freely-available mp3s), now everybody can hear 'em.

Friday, March 7
Gray Young (http://www.myspace.com/grayyoung)

Saturday, March 8
The Ex-Members (http://www.myspace.com/theexmembers)
Men (http://www.myspace.com/mrandmrsmen)
Hey Willpower (http://www.myspace.com/heywillpower)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

I got an email the other day stating that this was to be Ex-Members' LAST SHOW EVAR. Dave & Shirle' are looking to focus on their art & their cheffing (cheffery?), respectively. Drummer Melissa Buffington is still looking to rock out, though, so if your band is looking for one of the best drummers in the Triangle, this may be your lucky day, depending on your level of tolerance for bad jokes from behind the kit.

Men would appear to include the 2/3rds of Le Tigre that aren't Kathleen Hanna (JD Samson & Johanna Fateman, that is).

Saturday, March 8
A is Jump (http://www.myspace.com/aisjump2)

Monday, March 10
Ten Penny
Lonesome Departed
Local 506, Chapel Hill

This is a Local 506 Free For All (free admission over 21).

Alias Smith & Jones (http://www.myspace.com/aliassmithandjonesband)
The Ts (http://www.myspace.com/thettttt)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

This is another 506 Free For All. Alias Smith & Jones contain half of the core lineup of the great early-90s Raleigh rockband Vanilla Trainwreck, plus Danny Kurtz (ex-Backsliders) and a guy named Isaac Lake.

As if that weren't enough '93 Raleigh action for you, The Ghost of Saturday Nite is the new band featuring Ethan Smith (ex-Orifice).

Rounding it out are the Ts, aka Karen A. Mann's (herself a mid-'90s Raleigh fixture) favorite Raleigh band.

Tuesday, March 11
Hazerai (http://www.myspace.com/hazerai)
Sightings (http://www.myspace.com/sightings)

I'm down with this return to single-word bandnames. Less typing.

Thursday, March 13
des_ark (http://www.des-ark.org)
Environmental Youth Crunch (http://www.myspace.com/environmentalyouthcrunch)

Bull City Headquarters, Durham

It's a rockshow! It's a vegan meal!

Thursday, March 13
Craig Hilton
Pulsoptional (http://www.pulsoptional.org/)
Phon
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Craig Hilton has been noise/freaking in the Triangle for a decade or more, both in various bands (including a stint in Thor's punkrock side-project Thor and the Ass Boys) and with the Center for Transgressive Behaviors, who for a brief period were cropping up all over the Triangle with their multimedia extravaganzas of nun-fucking, live onstage birth & coprophagy.

Phon make their ambient glitchtronica with a massive array of pedals and processors, which can be viewed in glorious hand-drawn detail here (PDF).

Pulsoptional are a composers' collective from Durham -- yeah, a buncha academics, who may not like the term "21st-century classical" but are fairly likely to have a well-formed opinion about it, anyway. Their debut CD was also one of the best local releases of 2007, regardless of genre.

Thursday, March 13
American Aquarium (http://www.americanaquarium.com/)
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh

Thursday, March 13
The Never (http://www.trekkyrecords.com/never.html)

This is a benefit for the Woods Charter School.

Friday, March 14
Skeptic Tank
Pneurotics (http://www.myspace.com/pneurotics)
Sea Cow
Marla Vickers
Broad Street Cafe, Durham

This is a benefit for a Broad St. employee whose house burned, injuring her husband in the process.

Friday, March 14
Citified (http://www.citifiedband.org/)
Noncanon (http://www.myspace.com/noncanon)
Tin Star
The Garage, Winston-Salem

In case you missed Citified during their recent Triangle jaunt (or if you're gonna be passing through Winston-Salem anyway . . . hey, it could happen!) here's another chance to see 'em, along with freaked-out blooz-droners Noncanon.

Friday, March 14
Fan-Tan (http://www.myspace.com/fantanrock)
The Love Language (http://www.myspace.com/thelovelanguage)
Max Indian (http://www.myspace.com/maxindian)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Friday, March 14
Joe Romeo & the Orange County Volunteers (http://www.myspace.com/joeromeomusic)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Friday, March 14
The Loners (http://www.demonbeachrecords.com/loners.html)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

The Loners are Raleigh's favorite gtr/drums bang-stomp garage-rock combo.

Saturday, March 15
Cantwell, Gomez, Jordan (http://www.cantwellgomezandjordan.com)
A New Dawn Fades (http://www.anewdawnfades.cherubrecords.com/)
Untied States (http://www.untiedstates.us/)
Woman
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Cantwell Gomez & Jordan are teetering on the brink of a releasing a new CD (I believe it's due out April 5th), so expect new songs, I suppose, and some encouragement to check out the CD-release show in a few weeks.

Saturday, March 15
Olympic Ass Kicking Team (http://www.terryandersonrocks.com/)
The Ts (http://www.myspace.com/thettttt)
Pour House, Raleigh

Sunday, March 16
Cantwell, Gomez, Jordan (http://www.cantwellgomezandjordan.com)
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham

Last time CGJ played on the radio for us, it was Halloween and they did an entire set of covers, in their own brilliantly screwy way. This time around, they're just a few weeks away from releasing a new CD (their first in what seems like eons, and is probably more like 2 years), so while there'll likely be a cover or two, you oughta also expect a sneak-preview of the New Stuff. 4:00 p.m. 88.7 FM or wxdu.org.

Sunday, March 16
Flicker (http://www.chapel-hill.nc.us/flicker)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Flicker is the long-running short-film festival that turns the Cradle into a salon of the Super-8 cinematographic arts every 6-8 weeks. Plus cookies!

Sunday, March 16
Mr. Quintron (http://www.southern.com/southern/band/QTRON/)
The Black Lips (http://www.bomp.com/BlackLips.html)
Miss Pussycat (http://www.eccentricneworleans.com/mr__quintron.htm)
The Gondoliers (http://www.myspace.com/comeseethegondoliers)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Holy crap, what a show. Anytime New Orleans' own Mr. Quintron makes an appearance, you know you've been blessed. You get a freaky puppet show from Miss Pussycat *and* the spookiest organ-playing in the history of the North American continent, and that's a mighty long time.

Add in Atlanta's Black Lips *and* Chapel Hill's mighty Gondoliers, and you've got simply way too much entertainment for a Sunday night. There's probably a Blue Law against this show.

Monday, March 17
Midtown Dickens (http://www.myspace.com/midtowndickens)
Tilly and the Wall (http://www.tillyandthewall.com)
Capgun Coup (http://www.myspace.com/capguncoup)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Tuesday, March 18

Paris Falls (http://www.myspace.com/parisfalls)
Geva Avalon
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Tuesday, March 18
Impossible Arms
Polynya (http://www.myspace.com/polynyapolynya)
Waumiss (http://www.myspace.com/waumiss)
Hell, Chapel Hill

Impossible Arms is the new thing from Mike Meyerson (Mowing Lawns). Waumiss is the new thing from Clarque & Caroline (Shallow Be Thy Name, plus Clarque is or has been in Kingsbury Manx, Chuck Chuck Goose & Goatthrower). Speaking of Goatthrower, Clarque says Waumiss will be covering one of their songs.

Polynya is the new/old thing featuring members of Fashion Design, Roxotica & many others.
