I heard Tom play on Saturday night at the benefit for his son, Esten. After a long, great night of music (I particularly enjoyed Velvet, The Breaks, The Never -- I didn't hear the rest, although I am informed by a 6-year-old friend that Baron von Rumblebuss rocked), Tom got up to play a few songs at the end of the night, backed by the SNMNMNM guys. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure none of those songs were SNZ songs, although they were clearly Maxwell songs and probably very new. And I have to say, having been to a few shows around here over the years, I haven't experienced as emotional a musical moment as I did standing there in the Scoreboard Grill watching a man pound at the electric piano and sing about loss and demons, all the while knowing that his three-year-old son was lying in a hospital bed and that a whole lot of people had showed up to help him and Melanie and their sick little boy. He looked like a humble man to me, and a grateful one -- not just to have all those people there, but also to have a guitar and a piano with which he could say what he had to say. I was humbled to be there for that.

Keeping it positive!

I thoroughly enjoyed Maxwell/Mosher at Troika. And
while they did play several SNZ songs, they had plenty
of others as well.

However, note that maybe my ties with Corporate
America aren't as intimate as Grady's. I was happy to
hear some old SNZ songs that I hadn't heard in like
seven years. Maybe it was something about seeing a
handful of supernice fellas performing them live
rather than accepting corporate america's spoon down
my throat. I just don't know at the moment.

Umm, well, if you consider "founding members Jimbo
Mathus and Katharine
Whalen . . . along with drummer Chris Phillips,
bassist Stu Cole and
horn man Je Widenhouse" to be "a bunch of hired
guns," then OK. Hmm,
might "donontheweb" be original bassist Don Raleigh?

Here's more from Dave Menconi's blog:

The other day I was on hold with Evil Corporate
Webhost Godaddy.com, and
the hold music was *still* SNZ's "Hot," complete
with "Hell," and even
if I hadn't already been ready to switch hosts
thanks to their pathetic
customer service & technical stupidity, the SNZ
hold-music would've
finished the job. That was a pretty fun record the
first 15-20 times I
heard it, but thanks to Corporate America, I've now
heard it 10,000,000
times.

Which is why I find it kinda equally sad that
Maxwell/Mosher are still
playin' [some of] the hits from it, and that the
other half of the SNZs
are back together, presumably to flog their half of
it as well. Do
neither of them realize how sick everybody got of
having those songs
crammed down their throats, not necessarily by them,
but by their
Corporate Masters?

Somebody lemme know when either/both of those groups
have switched up
their sets to all-new music, and I might be willing
to give 'em another
listen. (Or, well, probably not, but at least I'd be
less inclined to
cringe when I hear their names.)

And for folks in bands who're contemplating a grab
for that brass ring,
consider this cautionary tale of the Zippers:

Hey kids,

Just a heads up that the Squirrel Nut Zippers show
at the Cradle in
February WILL NOT feature Ken Mosher and Tom
Maxwell. They are still
going strong with their Maxwell/Mosher band and
ARE NOT in SNZ. So it
looks like it'll be Jimbo and a bunch of hired
guns!

Just tryin' to keep it real!
