I would love to see you guys at this discussion. This is the first such
event we've ever tried (at least in recent memory). The more people
participate, the better it will be.

Hope to see you there!

"The Future of Music in the Triangle"=20
A panel discussion
FREE
2-4 pm, Saturday, Oct. 2 in downtown Carrboro
Part of the Indy Music Awards

How are changes in technology and law affecting local musicians?

Can independent record labels find a way to use free online music
distribution to make money?

How are local hip-hop artists reacting to the recent court decision on
sampling?=20

Do musicians know enough about copyright law to protect their work-and
avoid breaking the law themselves?=20

These and more questions are the subject of "The Future of Music in the
Triangle," a panel discussion sponsored by the Independent Weekly
newspaper as part of its first annual Indy Music Awards festival on
Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004. The panel will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the
Century Center, 100 N. Greensboro St., in Carrboro*. Entrance is free.
The scheduled panelists are:

Cesar Comanche, hip-hop emcee with the Justus League crew. He'll discuss
the recent federal court decision on sampling. He's currently working on
his third album, Squirrel and the Aces, and might give us a listen.

Jennifer Jenkins, a professor at Duke Law School and director of the
Center for the Study of the Public Domain. She's an expert in copyright
law and the way it affects artistic expression.=20

Tor Hansen, A&R and sales & marketing director of Yep Roc Records, an
indie label with a diverse catalog of genres and styles. Its Web site,
YepRoc.com, allows users to hear songs and watch videos by Yep Roc
artists.

David Cantwell, drummer for the rock band Cantwell, Gomez and Jordan.
He's a veteran of the bands Razzle and Cold Sides. Besides being a
prolific musician, his works at an independent music store on Franklin
Street and has insight on local music buying habits.

Fred Stutzman of ibiblio.com, the online library based at UNC-Chapel
Hill. He is a music archivist, audiophile and geek who closely follows
changes in technology and law and the way they affect listeners and
online music distribution channels.

Whitney Broussard, entertainment attorney. He is a partner in the New
York office of Selverne, Mandelbaum & Mintz, which represents Ludacris,
Wu-Tang Clan, Third Eye Blind, Van Halen, Motley Crue, Wyclef Jean,
India.Arie, Fisherspooner and many others.

Independent staff writer Fiona Morgan will moderate. Her occasional
column, The Monitor, explores the intersection of music, technology,
copyright law and media ownership.

This idea for this panel was inspired by the Future of Music Coalition's
annual conference in Washington, D.C. It is intended to address the
local impact of changes in the music industry, technological innovation
and legal and policy issues.=20
