For anybody who might be interested & didn't already hear, there's a wake on Sunday for Randy Ward--email me off-list for more info, I guess.

Thanks to the card-pushers' "holiday" this weekend, there are a *lot* of shows:

Thursday, February 12
My Dear Ella [http://www.mydearella.com], The High Strung
[http://www.thehighstrung.com/]
Kings, Raleigh

Friday, February 13
The Crimson Spectre [http://www.slavemagazine.com/crimsonspectre/],
Feces for War Paint, Roxotica, Selfish Motive
Ace's Basement, Greensboro

Shows at Ace's claim to start early, and the last one I attended
actually did start more-or-less on time, on-time being around 8:30.
Just FYI.

On the bill tonight, Greensboro's own socialist-unionist hardcore band
Crimson Spectre, who're truly one of my absolute fave punk bands, not
leastways because their singer is actually a union organizer, not just
somebody who's read Marx in school.

Also on the bill, Rock Hill/Greensboro's Feces for War Paint, a giant
sludgefest who just get better and better as they add more and more
guitarists. And Roxotica, the only all-woman New Wave Of British Heavy
Metal tribute band from the Triangle. I hope.

Friday, February 13
Taija Rae, Dawn Chorus
Project Space 211, Winston-Salem

This is apparently also a reading by local author Quinn Dalton, but
due to the major sore throat I'm nursing, I'm going to have to refer
you to www.ps211.org for more info.

Friday, February 13
Super Furry Animals [http://www.superfurry.com/], Papa M
[http://www.papa-m.com/]
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Friday, February 13
César Alvarez [http://www.cesaralvarez.net/], The Quarantines
[http://www.freelon.com/quarantines/main.php]
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Quarantines are a brand-new-band--follow the link above to learn just
about everything anybody knows about them at present, which I assume
isn't much, as this is their first public show. If memory serves,
César Alvarez attended the NCSA and is now located up north somewhere,
where he writes songs & plays sax & whatnot.

Friday, February 13
The Spinns [http://www.thespinns.freeservers.com/]
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Saturday, February 14
Great Falls, Young People, Ashrae Fax
[http://www.geocities.com/fog666/sacredsound.html], The High Heels
Ace's Basement, Greensboro

Saturday, February 14
Neil Diamond All-Stars, David Spencer Band
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Saturday, February 14
Evil Weiner Tribute Party
Local 506, Chapel Hill

In case you haven't caught it on the radio yet, there's a brand new CD
in town, called "I Can't Get That Evil Weiner Song Out of My Head." 17
(is that right? sounds right) local bands covering their favorite Evil
Weiner songs, beautifully. If you're a longtime Evil Weiner fan like
me, this is the best news of the year to date; if you aren't, you're
liable to become one, perhaps without even realizing it, if you spend
any time listening to WXDU or WXYC over the next 6 weeks or so.

Or if you attend this show, where Evil Wiener themselves will be
acting as the backing band while various members of the bands on the
CD get up and sing their hearts out.

Here's more info from Ron:

"Some of your favorite acts will be performing Evil Wiener songs with
Evil Wiener backing them up, kinda like Evil Wiener karaoke. Members
of Work Clothes, Shallow be thy Name, The Ghost of Rock, Soccer,
Ameliorate, Mind Sirens, Regina Hexaphone and many more. Dr. Brian
Butler will be opening the show, hopefully we'll see you there, it
should be a lot of fun !"

Saturday, February 14
Modern Day Urban Barbarians [http://www.mdub.com/], Torch Marauder,
Sweet Militia, Manamid [http://www.manamid.com]
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Here's the lowdown from Scooter Hicks:

no less than 4 bands will be risking life and limb, not to mention
forced celibacy for at LEAST the next month in the interest of
bringing YOU (yes you) several hours worth of heartwarming,
nether-region-tingling, rock-TASTIC creations from the minds of some
of the carolina's most genre-busting bastards! on valentines fucking
day. are we nuts? or are you just nuts enough to miss it?

SWEET MILITIA - featuring the only two people who aren't going to get
their asses KICKED for playing this crazy show, plus CY RAWLS bringing
the low-end and larynx. hot dangit! analogue II derived,
independently-produced progasuraus rex from the city of medicine.

MANAMID - Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, and Mike are back! after a 2 month
hiatus recording, drinking affordable red wines, and doing general
lawn maintenance, we are very much ready to get in front of some teens
and make a racket again. its high time you started gettin yer fannies
out there all at once and loving the crap out of us for christ's sake!
we've been doing this 2 years now, and i think we've proven that you
can trust us. manamid never cheats on it's adoring phans.

MODERN DAY URBAN BARBARIANS - (from new york)

TORCH MAURADER - one of our great national treasures - the man in blue
with nothing but himself on tv for backup! is there a more geniune
person on momma earth than this guy?

Saturday, February 14
The Breaks, The Pink Slips
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Saturday, February 14
Love Hangover
Kings, Raleigh

The Love Hangover is an annual lovelorn-duets event, dating back to
the very first Valentine's Day at Kings (this is the 5th go-round). It
was started by the dressiest man in Raleigh, Richard Alwyn, and it
continues despite his departure last year for the cold loveless shores
of Manhatta. Here's a lineup:

Katrina Lamberto & Brandon Whitesell
David Mueller & Kristina Renee
Lynn Blakey & Rob Watson
Jeramy Lowe & Julia Martin
Caroline Mamoulides & Scott Phillips

Sunday, February 15
Jule Brown [http://www.unc.edu/~holland3/jbrown.htm]
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Monday, February 16
The Mountain Goats [http://www.themountaingoats.net/], Cub Country
[http://www.jadetree.com/bandpages/bio_cubcountry.html], The Rosebuds
[http://www.therosebuds.com/]
Go! Studios Rm. 4, Carrboro

Non-dilemma of the week: now that John Darnielle lives in Durham, are
the Mountain Goats a local band? Don't worry, I lose sleep over these
questions so that *you* won't have to. In any case, the Mountain Goats
have a new CD out, from which I've heard exactly one song (it was
good); if it's anywhere near the quality of _Tallahassee_, it's a
formidable piece of work indeed. & of course you already know that
Darnielle tends to throw himself into his shows, plus he's smart as
fuck, which lends itself to good banter. Which seems insignificant
unless you've spent much of the past 10 years standing around watching
musicians tune their guitars sans banter.

The Roesbuds are fuggin superstars in their own right, so I suppose
now would be the time to advise you to show up early, even though it's
a Monday night, else you'll be standing in the street while they're
playing.
