Brian,

We have a project, "Copyright law reform, and promoting the creative commons initiative in Uganda" being implemented by NABOTU, Centre for Health Human Rights and Development and the Consortium of Uganda University Libraries. We have so far held one workshop for university librarians which focused on ideas for reforming the copyright law. Librarians were also introduced to the creative commons initiative. We have also held lobby meetings with relevant authorities. This week, we made a presentation on the same at the Uganda Vice-Chancellors Forum. The vice-chancellors forum resolved to include the issues of copyright reform and adoption of CC in their institutional IP policies. So there's some movement in this direction.

Alex,

I think that's an interesting idea. Am sure right now, you can easily get an interest group in Broadcasting and Multi-Media because Uganda is grappling with Copyrights - especially in the Arts and Media. Being able to have an alternative, for the local Ugandan artist and/or teacher to know that their is a non-expensive way to protect their IP while sharing appropriately, within their desired realm is a good idea.

I would certainly run this idea by our University Librarian, and see what she thinks.

But certainly, "loosely" congregated interest groups that can help to form value propositions, should create an interesting bottom-up frenzy of CC users and enthusiasts.

Hi Abbas,

This is a great question! I relate it to Brian Ssennoga's request for value propositions to a university (and other potential users of CC licences in Africa.) Unless I am mistaken, Uganda Regional Meeting highlighted the need to develop targeted value propositions? Considering which, would the affiliates like us to establish, for lack of a better word, "Interest Groups", for random examples,OER, Publishers, Business Models, audio/visual, etc. etc.? The idea here being facilitating ground-up, self-forming, "loose" networks/associations around issues/areas of common interest? Borrowing from Brian's example, a "Universities Interest Group" would explore, draft and share value propositions for a University to adopt CC. Of course, complimenting work by other groups, teams and staff.

Please share your thoughts.

Thanks,

Alex

Hi folks,

I'm just interested in knowing -- what are the reasons that you give to a prospective organization for them to adopt a CC licence for their works? How do you convince someone to use CC?
