Matt – you’re doing a great job and it pleasing to hear you say you’ve had good support from the Royal Society.

I second Richard, Alison, and Kim's comments on this.

Having said that, nine months is hardly a basis from which any organisation can undertake any sort of serious work.

This is true, but as a community, we don't have to limit our planning to the end of our current confirmed funding. In fact, if we had a 5 or 10 year plan which was put together from ideas sourced from the CC community, this could be a powerful tool for convincing funders that CC ANZ is a worthwhile social investment. The Wellington City Council have trialled using Loomio as a consultation platform, is this worth a try?

I'd also like us to look beyond public funding bodies, and consider more use of crowdfunding. Matt has had some success running PledgeMe campaigns to fund part-time salaries for interns. Is it overly ambitious to think we could fund some or all of Matt's salary (our single largest spend I believe?) by crowdfunding? Could we have a fundraising page on GiveALittle.co.nz, linked from creativecommons.org.nz, to obtain a yield from people who value what that site provides? (while we're on the topic of crowdfunding, I'd just like to put in another pitch for people to donate to support Webcitation: http://webcitation.org/)

In the longer term, hopefully we will see more people making a living from CC-licensed creative works, just as they make money from ARR-licensed works. More Nina Paleys! It would be great if we could brainstorm ways for CC ANZ to help people do that, and encourage them to donate a proportion of their earnings back to support CC ANZ in its work.

If there is any way that we can contribute to the understanding of your funders of the importance of CC to our respective areas then please let us know (off-list or whatever).

Absolutely, as a long-term volunteer, I would be happy to write a letter of endorsement for CC ANZ and for Matt, if this would help with funding.

"Voting... is the next to last refuge of the politically impotent. The last refuge is, of course, giving your opinion to a pollster, who will get a version of it through a dessicated question, and then will submerge it in a Niagra of similar opinions, and convert them into - what else? - another piece of news. Thus, we have here a great loop of impotence: The news elicits from you a variety of opinions about which you can do nothing except to offer them as more news, about which you can do nothing."
