Yes, I am having this debate with the people running the project here! It’s hard to explain the subtleties of re-use to people when they are first coming to
grips with CC. The words “non-commercial” seem to match what they want the licence to do. And remember, like I just said in my other email, since the content is user-generated you’re dealing with people who know nothing about rights management, so again
those words allay fears about people ‘ripping me off.’ From: cc-nz-bounces AT lists.ibiblio.org [mailto:cc-nz-bounces AT lists.ibiblio.org]
On Behalf Of Leigh Blackall Why did the project choose NC? Did they consider in doing so the images would not be usable in projects like Wikipedia for example? On Jan 28, 2013 7:30 AM, "Richard White" <richard.white AT otago.ac.nz> wrote: Interestingly, we are using the UC CEISMIC site as a good example for a citizen scientist project being mounted at Otago, where 'ordinary NZers' will contribute photos, data,
observations etc. What I like about the quake stories site is that it is very user-friendly in the way it presents the licensing information (e.g. when you click on the upload photo button).
"Only upload your own photos or photos that you have been given permission to use. All photos submitted to this site will be made available to others under the
Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 license - 2011." It's always a tricky balance as to how much information you provide people with, especially when those people won't be experts in rights management. We're considering adding
a little more in the way of explanatory text than is on the quake stories site, along the lines of 'you still own the copyright in the material and have the right to be acknowledged as the creator.' To me, this is the kind of thing people might be put off
by since there is that perception that you're giving your stuff away, so I want it to be up front. Just clicking on the CC licence deed doesn't actually communicate this. We'll also (probably) put a link to the full terms of use for a fuller explanation
of things for those who want it. Oh, and we'll use the NZ port of the licence. There is a risk of over-complicating things, of course, one that I am particularly prone to. But with a site where you want people to upload stuff you have to make it as
easy for them as possible, which is what the quake stories site does. I note that Paul's criticisms are more about meta-data and such - and how to do it. I'm just adding what I think the site does well to the conversation. | LinkedIn -----Original Message----- Hi Paul, I'm not sure I've followed all that, but here's a go at an answer: There's surely more scope for 'how-to' guides. CC Australia have written a version of these guides, the last of which is how to attribute:
http://creativecommons.org.au/learn-more/fact-sheets/creative-commons-licence-basics I've more or less followed that guide since I started at CC. Suggested improvements? You're right that the links in the images aren't to any external site, but that's not how I chose to give attribution. The attribution is actually contained in the *caption*,
as is the link to the CC licence. It wouldn't be hard to add a link to the image, if you think an extra link is worthwhile.
For the image, the UC CESIMIC Licence is neither here nor there: as a federated archive, they don't actually hold copyright to most of the content you can find on the site.
The copyright to the image used there is by Ross Becker. The UC CEISMIC logo is used with permission.
The licence to QuakeStories is an NZ licence: click on the link at the bottom:
http://www.quakestories.govt.nz/ Our own Creative Commons licence, for the text, is at the bottom of the site.
That's my best effort at an explanation. Let me know what I've missed. Cheers, Matt -- Matt McGregor Creative Commons DDI:

http://www.creativecommons.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/ROSS2478-1D 3_pt.jpg\ Rather than linking to the source (the attribution part surely...) Should it link to the source - cause I cannot see the attribution in that URL
http://www.creativecommons.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/ROSS2478-1D 3_pt.jpg\ But then I am not a machine. Indeed further looking at the CEISMIC site makes me ponder The licenses used seem to be CC Unported not NZ - interesting The objects like PDFs seem to have poor internal metadata - but no mention of CC license. Is this something the CC-NZ community should be trying to resolve - and construct a few how too's - embedding licenses in HTML, PDFs etc. Strange that a poster child seems to fail in a few areas. Thoughts? /paul ********************************************************************** This electronic email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed.
