Samples and sample packages are the life blood of the music industry.
Avoiding them, just on principle seems arbitrarily limiting -- why use
electricity when it's possible to make music without it?

Sure. And making sample packages is the kind of grunt work that people don't do for free. It's honest labor that you do to make a buck.

oh, it's whole lot more than grunt work; we talking about the same thing? the loopsets and sample libraries involved are MAJOR recording productions with just as much energy put into them as any other gig. I just bought a 7 gig library from Spectosonic (sp?), here's a partial list of tools they used in the creation of it:

Still, I've been avoiding them because that's the kind of nazi I am.

Not nazi, but awful close to Luddite.

interesting and useful to learn that you and other people who know the issues well have already thought about this and decided to do it anyway.

issues? you mean like standing in water while sticking a fork in the toaster?

Again, I'm not we're talking about the same thing. Sample libraries are paint on the pallette, ink in the printer -- I can't imagine a professional guitarist refusing to buy guitar strings for some notion of impropriaty... advising *musicians* to avoid the use of sample libraries should be framed with the consequences, that is: be prepared to where a bow tie and play in a lot of old churches.

If I did make a package of guitar samples under a free license, would it be useful?

only if it's good ;)
