Ouch! No sooner have I complained about NC-SA than someone gives a good
reason for using it.

The only justification for any NC licence, is when distribution has to
be gratis.
When something is required to be "gratis", the economics are totally
distorted.

"The CC-Developing Nations Licence" solves some of the economic issues
that the NC licences cause. However, it creates a different set of
issues in developed countries.

A long time ago I read an essay on "Gift Economies" that pretty much
outlines why NC is a bad idea. I don't remember who wrote it, or
where I read it. :(

Drew wrote: "Could it be that what people who use NC-SA really want
is share-alike but no
selling / earning direct profits?"

I think Drew's sense of people's motivation for using it is right;

Possible.

it was certainly my initial motivation and I still know many bloggers who
use it for precisely that reason.

My blogs have an NC licence, simply because that was/is the default.
I haven't bothered changing it, even though it is a bad licence to use
for a blog.

It's just that I hadn't and they haven't really thought about the
consequences of combining those elements.

I don't think many people have thought about the implications of "NC",
especially as laid out in the guidelines of what Creative Commons says
it means. [Which I noticed today have changed since I last looked
them on the wiki, six or so months ago.]
