I assume your router contains a firewall. If so,
you should configure the firewall to provide strong
protection from outside intrusion.
Our router is a 2-line analog telephone adaptor combined with a router
in the same box (one line in from DSL modem, three lines out to two phones and one hub).
The DSL modem does the PPPoE (connects with the internet) and receives a dynamic IP which it shares with the ATA (WAN?).
-line 1 phone
-line 2 phone
Wall phone jack -- DSL modem ---- ATA---- hub ===== 4 computers
(or fiber-optic modem) WAN LAN
The ATA has a WAN IP address obtained from the DSL modem (via DHCP)
and it has also address 192.168.99.1 and assigns addresses in that series to the hub/computers (probably also phone lies) via DHCP server.
I can access the ATA using a browser, but see nothing about firewall setup
for either WAN or LAN setup. (Did not check under VOICE).
Where do I set up a firewall in the ATA/router? Should I set it up on individual computers instead? You explained how for computers accessing dialup through a gateway computer. Windows and I think Puppy linux have ways to set up a firewall - should I be using those or assuming the ATA/router has a firewall? Is there some simple way to use BL to check if I have a firewall set up external to the computer?
