udhcpc only works if there is a DHCP server
listening on the network.

The default gateway is not the DNS server. The
default gateway simply routes traffic from one
network to another (eg from you home network
to the internet). The DNS server is different
-- it converts alphanumeric internet addresses
(eg slashdot.org) to numerical IP addresses
(eg 216.34.181.45).

Of course you can run a DNS server on the system
that is providing the default gateway. Or you
could run a DHCP server. Or any other kind of
server (eg a HTTP server for remote configuration
of the gateway). In that case the address of the
default gateway and the DNS server and the DHCP
server and the HTTP server will all be the same.

Cheers,
Steven
