I will remove XLI and Abiword from the menu.
Neomagic video on my Presario 1230 (similar chips are on Gateway, Hitachi, DELL, IBM) crashes the same way with Xfbdev when I try to run xli or switch VTs. It crashes with Xvesa but is supposed to work with SVGA server. Xfbdev works if you don't switch VTs and do avoid certain programs.
To avoid X (Opera / javascript) and improve usability of my 16MB-RAM laptop, I will attempt to compile edbrowse, a text editor cum html renderer (browser) in two versions, both with javascript support. About 300K download (plus the Mozilla spidermonkey javascript code which I could not get to work with elinks). Designed for the blind, in C. Precompiled dynamic binary available, static one may be forthcoming for linux and Windows. (Is DOS possible?.) There is a non-javascript version in perl. No graphics support, or text formatting. Supports streaming audio and plugins such as pdftohtml.
Single-key commands (b for browse an html file). SSL (uses cert.pem) and cookies. The sample config file provides a way to remove junk from google.

How might I make a menu of commonly used programs without jwm/X?
