Any PCI internal modem by Lucent/Agere will also work but
you need to download and insert a couple of driver modules
and make the pertinent devices.
Some of the computer repair places around here have bins
of old cards and drives for $1 or so. USR made a lot
of jumpered ISA modems and external modems. These do
not work as well on a noisy phone line as the PCI lucent,
because they connect at too high a speed. The 33K ones
are more stable under such conditions. In my experience
the external ones are more prone to lightning damage.
