I also have a laptop with neomagic chip (they are common).

If you type
XF86_SVGA -showconfig
it lists all the supported chips, which for BL2 includes NM2160.

In BL2 the list is a full page 5-7 items per line. Oddly enough, it says Operating System: Linux 2.2.13 i686 [ELF] tho Slackware 7.1 used 2.2.16.

Slackware 7.1 I think has Xfree86 3.3.6,
and Slackware 4.0 Xfree86 3.3.3.1.

http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.6/RELNOTES8.html#8 under "what's new in 3.3.3" lists "Support for NeoMagic notebook chipsets" (also vesafb ATI Rage Pro and IIC, Riva TNT, Matrox G100, Rendition).

Steven's no-xvesa.tgz works very well, to 800x600. You can add more modelines for higher resolution in XF86Config (I posted an example).
