I got the target laptop to which I've been discussing installing BL 3.5 over the last few days. I've run into 2 initial problems I'd like some help with: 1) whether there is a lilo package I can download and install to the laptop; and 2) how to get the gui working (Xvesa appears incompatible with this Neomagic 2160 chip).

Regarding point 1, I need to point out that the laptop has no floppy drive. It is for this reason that I've installed BL from the loop file version of BL 3.5 (downloaded it to the Win partition from the 'net). I was expecting to be able to install lilo to the mbr after having done a hard drive installation of BL from the loop file. But the command "lilo" appears not to exist in the loop file version of BL. Is there a download of lilo somewhere I can put on here? Can it be sent to me as an e-mail attachment? Please let me know.

Regarding point 2, one of the reasons I wanted lilo was to see whether it would have any effect on the horrible video I get using Xvesa on this laptop. After doing a bit of searching I now believe the Neomagic 2160 video chip is simply incompatible with Xvesa. I should mention that JWM does start, but the screen is red and black and the mouse cursor trails blue squares all around the screen when moved; obviously unusable. Then, when I try to exit JWM/Xvesa, I lose all display, even at the console.

I did a little reading in the archive but the solution to this Neomagic video problem is not entirely clear to me. I think this will require installing Steven's no-xvesa package: is that correct? Another thing I'm unsure of regarding this is whether any other package(s) from Slack or any other source will be needed. Can anyone help clarify what my next steps should be in order to get a working gui on this laptop? Is there any set of directions anywhere for setting up BL on a system whose video hardware is incompatible with Xvesa?

Input will be appreciated.

Thanks,
James
