Getting back to this project a bit more now. I envision the machine in

Freecell or Solitaire would be the only other use this machine would see.
Loading Opera on there would be imperative. So, I can expect problems
running Opera under a user account on BL 3.5, correct? If I use BL 3, I
should use only as high as version 8 of Opera, but avoid version 9? The
machine will have an ethernet connection to the 'net, btw, so no need for
the user to dial or use rxvt.

You need to put on at least glibc 2.2.5 for Opera 8 or 9 so you may as well use 9. My biggest problem with 'user' was dialing. rxvt uses ttyp? and I think it needs to be user writeable. Insert the NIC modules in rc. You need a copy of what is in /root/.opera in /home/usr/.opera with correct permissions. I copied and changed permissions. I think Opera is designed for each user to install it individually. The only trouble I had running 9 as user was if I did not run install.sh, but used opera from the directory I unpacked it into (which was possible with earlier versions).

So far as loading BL 2 on here, I'd like to use Xvesa rather than a fuller
X: is that advisable and/or possible with BL2?

I have been using it with BL2 for years already. Before BL3 existed.

Hopefully I'll be able to finish this project over Christmas break. I'll
undoubtedly have more questions between now and early Jan. Thanks for the
input so far.

Feel free to email me directly. I would like to get this working too.
