my laptop has 8 MB RAM, not the 12 MB. Does the system hangs because of that?

Yes, you must have 12mb RAM (or more) to
use the floppy version. With 8mb RAM, you
should use the DOS version.

Cheers,
Steven

In explaination:

Take DOS boot floppy and boot from it
Execute command
format c: /s

Now, download basiclinux DOS version on the computer with Internet access and floppy drive. Unpack it to some directopry. Install ARJ archiver on this computer.
Execute command

arj a a:baslin *.* /v1440

and swap the floppies when required.

Now, copy arj.exe to the destination computer. Create directory c:\baslin
md c:\baslin
cd c:\baslin

Unpack the basiclinux floppies

arj x a:baslin /v

Now replace autoexec.bat using

copy con c:\autoexec.bat

and type

cd c:\baslin
boot

Press F6, enter and reboot the computer.
