The confusion here is that Sindi posted at
http://keesan.freeshell.org/bl/blfiles.htm that
"OPERA 7.23 or 8.52 (or probably also 8.54) or
9.2X NEEDS glibc 2.2.5 " along with the contents

Anything that works with glibc 2.2.5 will also work with any later glibc, unless the glibc was compiled to need a certain kernel (or later).

Opera 7 and later will work with glibc 2.2.5 from Slackware 8.1, or glibc 2.3.1 from Slackware 9.0, or later glibc. But Slackware 9.1 and later glibc's were compiled to only work with a 2.4 or later kernel, and BL3.50 has a 2.2 kernel. So for BL3.50 you can use glibc 2.2.5 or 2.3.1 (or compile your own version of a later glibc, but why bother?). I used 2.2.5 because I have Slackware 8.1 CD and don't want to download glibc from 9.0.

of Sindi's 1.2MB package for glibc 2.2.5, oper8lib.tgz
So which does Opera 9.21 really NEED?? the default
BL3-recommended glibc 2.3.1 -or- glibc 2.2.5 with
Sindi's other specified packages??

Confused on this, so TY again for any good clarification.

I wrote 'How to Install Opera on BL3' and (natually)
those are the instructions I favor. On the other
hand, Sindi does her own thing (as usual) and favors
a different method. Take your pick.

Cheers,
Steven

I think Steven's instructions also call for a larger package of X libraries than is actually needed by Opera, which he posted as an all-purpose add-on for BL3 to make it work with other X-based programs. ldd opera lists the 'dependencies' (libraries that are required) but that does not include two libraries required online (to resolve DNS addresses).

Linux usually has at least three ways to do anything. In this case glibc from SW8.1, SW9.0, or compile your own.

See http://browsers.evolt.org/?opera/linux/612 for Opera 6.12
I think it works with libc5 and in mono. Later versions require at least 8-bit color.

Has anyone used 9.50b with BL yet?

Links graphical browser is statically compiled but does not do javascript.

Sindi
