What is the maximum resolution your laptop?

Then there is no need for xf86config. Simply install
the appropriate Xserver package from Slackware 4.0
and no-xvesa.tgz. Then look in /etc. You should
find a file named XF86Config. Replace that file with
the XF86Config file you found.
That's all there is to it (do not run the xf86config
utility -- it is for building an XF86Config from
scratch). Execute startx. If the XF86Config file
you found is correct, then your new Xserver should
boot.
Let us know how it goes.
Cheers,
Steven
