-----------

I just bought a second-hand laptop: P120, 48mb RAM.
It came with an extensive Windows 95 installation
(Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.). Normally, the
first thing I do is wipe the HD and install BL3;
however, on this occasion, there was plenty of room
on the HD so I decided to keep the Windows stuff
(as least for now).

Here's what I did:

(1) Since the laptop had no floppy drive, I used
a CDrom, to load a small Linux into a ramdrive.

(2) I used Linux editor to edit C:\MSDOS.SYS
(BootGUI=0) and then created a new directory
(C:\BASLIN).

(3) On a BL3 laptop, I copied the DOS version of BL3
and fips.exe onto PCMCIA CF card. Then I inserted
the CF card into the new laptop and used the ramdisk
Linux to copy them into C:\BASLIN.

(4) I then rebooted the laptop (because of BootGUI=0
it came up in DOS). Then I executed WIN to start
Windows 95. Under Programs>Accessories>SystemTools
I executed ScanDisk. Then I used DiskDefragmenter
to do a FULL DEFRAGMENTATION (this is very important!).
At the conclusion of the defrag, I did scandisk a
second time.

(5) I then rebooted the laptop and went (in DOS) to the
BASLIN directory. There I executed fips and created
some space at the end of the HD.

(6) I then rebooted the laptop and went (in DOS) to the
BASLIN directory. There I executed boot and used
fdisk (in BL3) to put a swap partition and a Linux
partition in the space created by fips.

(7) I then used mke2fs (in BL3) to put a filesystem on
the linux partition and mounted it at /hd

(8) I then executed install-to-hd to put BL3 on the new
filesystem.

Cheers,
Steven
