the FAQ file said to 'untar' the file in question (lynx.tgz)

Any alternative suggestions?

Untar means extract (x) from a tar archive.
tar -xf extracts a tar file
tar -zxf extracts a zipped tar file
tar -zxvf extracts a zipped tar file verbosely

tar -zxvf /tmp/package.tgz will extract a file that is in /tmp to your current location.

tar -ztvf filename.tgz | less

produces a list of what is in the package (that you can arrow up and down in, or search in by typing / and the search term)

If you want to extra just one file, say usr/local/bin/lynx

tar -zxvf lynx.tgz usr/local/bin/lynx

For a list of what is in different linux packages download MANIFEST.gz from the website (or copy from a CD) and read with zless MANIFEST.gz.

I found a reference to 'untar' in linux newbies. Try perusing that site for basic information.
