Is there a way to see what codes are being sent out by a keyboard as a
key is pressed?

There is an X program which does this as mentioned in the thread from a few years ago about fixing the backspace key. Please find that thread.

It is really weird that the backspace key should work normally under the
CLI, but wrongly with some keyboards under X.

Sorry for harping on about this, but it is obvious to me that there is a
fault in some code somewhere that should be fixed.

Steven fixed it with his Xvesa setup. Take a look at his .xinitrc and maybe you can use the same fix with the SVGA server, instead of my fix.
I think his fix reassigns values to one or two keys, rather than specifying all the keys like mine does. I use mine so my 84-key keyboard will work with Home and arrow keys on the number pad (but then the other arrow keys do not work, you may not be happy with that).

Sindi's patch is not a fix; it is a way to bypass the fault and correct
only its effect.

It is a fix.

I did not know that some keyboards do NOT need this fix.
