links2 -g still does not work correctly with svgalib. Jitter at 640 and
800, fuzzy text at 1024 and 1280. I did not try mplayer -vo svga since
-vo vesa works. I can use x11 for both.

The above is for the 8MB Rage 128 card, which would not work with any svga programs (links2, mplayer, zgv) until I uncommented the 640 modeline in libvga.config. And links2 graphical still did not work correctly (the text was all fuzzy at all resolutions I tested), and mplayer refused to work with -vo svga. Xvesa worked only if I booted without config.sys.

Back to the 2MB 264GT card. svgalib works WITHOUT uncommenting the modeline 640, to a degree. Links2 graphical works in resolutions 640, 800, 1024 and 1152 but has fuzzy text at 1280 - maybe the default modeline for that is bad and I don't know how to specify a good one. Can't test mplayer without a movie. zgv works perfectly at all resolutions now including 1280. (On the rage 128 it worked at all but 640, which was jittery).

Xvesa now works when I boot in framebuffer mode, at resolutions 1024 and 1152 but it messed up the screen (big colored letters, can't run any programs, but can reboot) on exit from 640, 800, and 1280. So Xvesa is either using default modelines which are wrong for these three resolutions, or detecting them wrong. (If I boot without framebuffer mode I think Xvesa worked at all resolutions properly).

Since I can't adjust modelines in Xvesa, I will use it at 1024 and 1152 only. I have no need for 800 resolution on this desktop computer.

I need to learn to detect the proper modelines for svgalib so that 1280 will work with the 2MB card and links2, and 640 will work with the 8MB card and zgv, and all the modes will work with that card and links2. svgalib package comes with various test programs that might do it.
