Since bypassing config.sys allowed a 333MHz Gateway to boot with 2.4.31
(it already booted with 2.2.26) I tried that but it did not help.

This Gateway 330MHz Celeron which won't boot with kernel 2.4.31 unless you bypass config.sys also won't work with 8319too.o with 2.4.31. I get a string of error messages.

It boots with loadlin with config.sys and works with rtl8319.o using kernel 2.2.26 or 2.2.16.

This is in contrast to the Emachine which boots ONLY with kernel 2.4.31 (at least using loadlin) but needs to bypass config.sys for Xvesa to work with ATI video.

Problems to date with 2.4.31:

Gateway problems above (config.sys conflict, network card won't work)

usb_serial will not insert and must be compiled into the kernel (alond with usbcore and uhci) to use a USB PDA, making the kernel much larger. I had to leave out sound, scsi, and framebuffer to get it back down to about 660K. Even without usb storage. (usb_serial works in 2.2.26).

We found a serial cradle for the PDA, much simpler.

Many sound cards need gameport.o which is not in modules.dep. I just got cs4232 working this way (and es1370 and es1371, but sblive does not need it).

I am hoping for an improved 2.2.X which does usb serial. Why is it working in DOS but not 2.2.26 kernel linux?
