Would it be difficult or impossible for me to compile a
static mke2fs that will work on sparse-super partitions?

Should be possible. You'll want to compile both mke2fs
and e2fsck.

I found a 2001 dietlibc e2fsck, about 63K, statically linked, which in BL3 loop segfaults. There is a 2003 version of dietlibc but the binaries are mostly 2001.

There are also dumpe2fs mke2fs resize2fs and tune2fs. Does resize2fs actually work on existing filesystems?

Are there any archives of utilities precompiled with uClibc? I don't really want to download and compile 3.5MB source code.

Timidity for BL3 works perfectly out of the box in BL2 to which I have installed libc5 from Slackware 4.0, and sounds better with eawpats, which is 28MB bz2 and unpacks to 36MB. I needed 23MB of this to listen to an assortment of classical midis. I am looking for a way to extract .pat from .sf2 (I found a large .sf2 for just strings).
