Emachine with ATI Rage IIC (4MB) onboard. 400Mhz (upgraded to 500MHz).

Both the svga server and the mach64 server mess up the video on exit when BL2 is booted with loadlin, and mach64 also messes it up while in use.
This is with Steven's generic XF86Config (one I created just gives a black screen).

Xvesa loads but crashes on exit.

The Emachine boots with lilo (from a 720K floppy disk), with Bl2 as default, and Xvesa now works perfectly. The others still don't.

This machine has different video problems when cpu speed is upgraded (cursor leaves a trail).

In contrast, the ATI Rage Pro LT works after booting with loadlin using SVGA and Mach64 X servers, but Xvesa segfaults. It is in a Compaq Deskpro where Lilo refuses to boot unless you add an IDE drive to the SCSI drive.

The Presario was recycled, having died before I could try out LILO.

In summary, if you have trouble with ATI Mach64 video and Xvesa, try LILO instead of loadlin, or if you don't have a Compaq, try F5 to bypass startup files then try Xvesa. If you have a Compaq that won't let you bypass config.sys (won't boot linux) and won't boot from a lilo floppy boot disk, try svga and mach64 servers (at least for the Pro LT).

It is good that linux offers at least three ways to do everything.
