Are you sure you have disk2.tar? It should be disk2.tgz.
disk2.tgz is simply an archive file. You can put it
anywhere: floppy, HD, CDrom, CF memory card.

What kind of emulation? There is a BL3 image for QEMU.
It is much faster than the floppy version, and it provides
100mb of space for add-ons.
