I downloaded from David's BL3 addon's site Ken's ltmodem.tgz package for
BL3.40 which says it won't work for any other BL that is earlier, but will
it work for BL2?

The ltmodem package works with kernel 2.2.26, so if BL2 is booted with a
2.2.26 kernel, it will work.
Ken

I can downgrade glibc so BL2 will work with 2.2.26 but I have a custom 2.4.31 kernel (for scsi and USB storage).

How do I compile ltmodem for 2.4.31? Do I have to recompile the kernel first and then all the modules, or can I do just one module?

I may need to use another ltmodem because we just managed to kill the last fast computer (600MHz PII) with 3 ISA slots by trying to replace the floppy drive without noticing it was turned on. The window fan was much louder than the computer. The power supply still works, and the cpu fan (with cpu and RAM removed, using power switch on motherboard) but it won't boot (no lights). Has anyone else done this and is there a fix? We don't have another similar PII board or cpu (small slot-type, not the same as a slot-type PIII someone gave us) to check which one we fried. (We can switch out cards and memory of course). My partner is trying to resuscitate this board, which came to us dead with some bad caps.

Steven, please could you find a tiny screen saver to use instead of the screen blanker? We have a closet full of monitors but not an excess of good computers. I have accidentally turned off the computer numerous times with BL running. These blasted ATX power supplies don't let you plug in the monitor so it is not obvious whether the computer is on when the screen is blank. How do I turn off the screen blanker? It probably saves more power than the screensaver would.
