Hi, I finally got BL-3.40 to boot on my HP Athlon using UMSDOS and the
"big" 2.2.26 kernel. Even so, loadlin had to be told to boot /dev/hde1!
One of the motivations, besides the challenge itself, was to try to get
the Lucent modem working under BL 3. There were a few problems, but the
highly-automated build script finally worked well. In the process, it
was necessary to install bash and modutils and a set of kernel headers
(I actually used a full source package) set up for "modversions". There
is no need to actually compile the kernel; just read the "First-read"
file and then run three scripts in order. It might have been possible
to do everything without bash, but I gave up because the screen was
becoming messy. Finally, "insmod lt_serial" and "insmod lt_modem" must
be added to etc/rc and var/eznet.conf must be changed to use /dev/modem.
It all seems to work fine, though I have not yet gotten X to work. Is
there aversion of Xfbdev that can be used?
