I cannot see any. Unless you need to use firewalling or a 2.2.26
module for some rare network card, the 2.4.31 kernel should be fine.

There will likely be a difference for something kernel-specifc like
cardmgr or insmod. But anything user-level, such as netpbm, or
hello world, or lynx, will be basically the same.

Your libc version will make a much bigger difference.

Possibly. It will definitely allow you to compile more 3rd-part drivers.
