Do you have any non-pnp ISA cards in the computer? If not, everything should be automatic. I have a jumpered ISA modem (IRQ3) , and a jumpered MGA/Parport card (IRQ 7) and even one jumpered SB sound card (IRQ 5).
PCI cards are always pnp.

So I changed that one to automatic or some such, and rebooted.

This time, dmesg under DSL 1.5 did _not_ show the line about confilct I
mentioned previusly:

Why not use irq=5?
An error message, something about conflict? I chose IRQ 10 because Windows
said the sound card had that interrupt. Though maybe that doesn't mean
much. Perhaps the BIOS settings?"

Windows likes to assign all sound cards as IRQ 10. You can probably change this manually to IRQ5 in Windows now and have it keep working.

Now, dmesg's oputput includes:

sb: Creative SB16 PnP detected
sb: ISAPnP reports 'Creative SB16 PnP' at i/o 0x220, irq 5, dma 1, 5
sb: 1 Soundblaster PnP card(s) found.

And Schumann's piano concerto is playing out of my 10 year old Soundblaster
speakers!

In BL and/or in DSL? The latter is harder to figure out because it is bigger. Therefore your question turned out to be BL-relevant.

There is an aumix for volume control if your speakers don't have that.

Thanks, Sindi and Sam, for your help.
Glad I could help.

Happy new year to all,
Sheldon
