You should be able to resolve this by either using a 'real' X server
from Slackware 7.1, or by using the BL3 xset.

Why would the BL3 xset work in BL2 when the SW71 xset only generates error
messages?

Because the BL3 xset works with Xvesa and the Slackware 7.1 xset
does not appear to do so.

I will look at it. I thought it must have libc5 dependency but it sounds like it is a script.

Or you can use the fontpath option, or whatever it is called (try Xvesa
--help and look for the option which lets you specify your own font
path).

Okay, in the morning (or I can modify XF86Config and use xsvga, which would also keep Xvesa from crashing on exit with the tseng cards - I found the instructions online for adding font paths there).

Why doesn't BL3 need xset? When I type abiword I get a message about not having xset and then it works anyway. There is no XF86Config, so Steven must have done something clever about the font path but I can't figure it out.
